Re: Anyone use an EH EL34 or 6CA7?

Yeah I really like Tube Depot, especially due to the posting of test points on them. Not sure if a lot of places do that or not but out of the 3 places I've bought from only they did so I liked it. I think I might go with the EH 6CA7. I heard its a lot like a EL34 but with the mids pulled back a ta...

Re: Anyone use an EH EL34 or 6CA7?

I would go for the JJ 6CA7's, over the EH's. The EH's have a little more high end, that tends to be brittle. The JJ's are warmer, less harsh in the highs, and more focused, tighter low end. I've had EH 6CA7's, JJ 6CA7's, Mullard RI EL34's, JJ E34L's, JJ KT77's and SED EL34's in my JVM. The JJ 6CA7's...

They're re-labeled JJ's.

My findings: JJE34L, JJ6CA7, EH6CA7, JJKT77, Mullard EL34's

First up, the EH 6CA7S.. I biased at roughly 37mV, and immediately noticed their "BIGGER" tone. Fat, nice low end, but a "New Sensor" high end, that I didn't care for. Nice big tone, but somewhat shrill on the high end. Still liked them but wasn't "wowed".. Next, JJ KT77's.. Big, fat, and warm. Very...

Re: 12AT7 in V5?

I use a Jan Phillips 5751 in V5 and its great. It's very close gain-wise to a 12AX7, but smoothes things out a bit and takes some of the graininess off the OD channels. I love it. I'm about to try that myself.. Got 2 GE/JAN U.S.A. 5751's from Doug Preston today. Both balanced, yet lower gain - 90/9...

Thinner, bland tone.. I tried a JAN/GE 12AT7, & JJ ECC81 in V5, and it sounded terrible, IMO. Took away volume, thinned out the tone, and robbed harmonics. I'd stick with an ECC83S, or 12AX7..

Re: JVM 210H. What's the consensus?

But I'm much happier with the JVM. It's a better amp, in every way I can imagine, (except white noise). "Hush" in the power amp loop will solve that if it is bothering you. not the gate part of the unit, the hush part. ...and not the pedal type, the line level rack unit. I bought an ISP Decimator p...

Re: JVM 210H. What's the consensus?

A brand new JVM 410H is $2000 almost everwhere in the US. You can find used ones for $1100-1500. Not sure about the 210H's. I agree that the JVM kills the DSL in versatility, but I get killer tones out of my DSL and I don't find the loop to be bad at all. Is mine a freak of nature or something??? B...

Re: JVM 210H. What's the consensus?

I've owned 3 DSL's, and now a JVM205H. First off, not sure what all the chatter is about "not much price difference" between the 210H, & 410H?? Here is the U.S., the difference is about $700! Anyway, for me, it's the JVM, hands down. The FX loop is MILES ahead of that on the DSL. The DSL's loop is a...

Bought an NS-2 - Does little/nothing to quiet JVM!

This amp sure has alot of HISS. The NS-2 did little to nothing to help. Tried loop, in front, etc... Do I need to look for something better?

Re: Boosting Crunch Red

My vote is for the MXR Zakk Wylde OD. For me, there's nothing more aggressive, and punchy, for boosting a Marshall. I've tried them all, (OCD, TS9, OD9, SD-1, ICE-9, and a host of others). The Wylde OD is THE BEST OD in front of a Marshall, IMO, and I'll never part with it. For METAL - It's AS GOOD ...

Re: Which preamp tube is V3?

the JJ ECC803 is not a good tube for the gain stages, by the way (V1 and V2), as their long plates tend to give microphonics issues sooner Not true - the ECC803S is an EXCELLENT tube for V1, which is more of a "tone" stage, than gain stage. It's one of the finest tubes out there, as far as tone's c...
