good deals on Amp kits ?

Post by okgb » Fri Jan 10, 2020 2:06 am

Looking for a reasonable deal on a marshall style amp head, one That I can hack up & experiment
there's allot of room in the old style single channel ones, most kits seem too serious trying to be old marshall heads
that they're close to a grand or more.
Amps JVM 410H [too many mods to mention ] '73 50w lead, 70's vibrochamp , mesa mkIII U.S. Vox pacemaker
Rock , pop rock & Blues style's mainly played
Gtr's Musicanman " Luke " wolfgang [ carved top w pearly gates ] Hondo lazer , Warmoth strat
Fx t.c. 2290 , Lexicon tc verb
Pedals tbone plexi , t.c. chorus , various handmade & usual suspects t.s. , zen , CB wah ..........

I'm on my second Weber kit. If it's something you wanna experiment with, the Weber stuff is perfect. You can be in a complete 100 watt Marshall kit for about $650...with the head cab. Some of the small parts like jacks and pots are sort of janky, but that stuff's easy to upgrade. You can also buy them a la carte to buy your own transformers and stuff.

Yeah The Weber seems to be one of the better buys around, allot of the kits are 800-1.200 would hope to find a used marshall at that point !

I don't know of any big-watt Marshall kits as complete and affordable as the Weber stuff.

I bought a Weber kit and the cab was warped. It was largely a cosmetic issue because it didn't interfere with the assembly, but if you're picky about that sort of thing it could bother you. They shouldn't have let it be sold with an obvious twist in it like that. Other than that, I've never seen better value amp kits than Weber. If you don't like the pots and jacks you can easily upgrade them.

Hey Casey , the Peavey Windsor that you modified, did you take the preamp pcb out or work with what was there ?
used Traynor amps used to be a good deal as a raw all the parts there platform, these days people seem to want a min 500 +
Any other recommended " donor " tube amps anyone ?

I used the original board but had to add a second, small board for the power amp section. The Windsor preamp is very easily modded to a 2203 preamp. I made it more complex by adding a switch to take in or out one tube and change the gain pot layout to make it switchable between a 2203 and 1959 (which required a 4pdt switch). I also added an effects loop right before the power amp (which was the biggest nuisance because I had to track down some squeel). But if you just want to turn it into a straight 2203 preamp, it's no problem.

The power amp is configured very differently than a typical Marshall, so I had to add a small perf board for that. I piggybacked it onto one of the Peavey mounting screws so there was no drilling involved. There are a few spots where traces have to be cut IIRC.

It's an ideal platform for that sort of thing. I used the hole for the "boost" button to mount a switch for the effects loop and put a level pot next to it. I used the "texture" knob as a negative feedback control. Of course, I also went through the amp and changed all the caps, resistors and things that I didn't like to higher quality ones or to match Marshall specs, and I swapped the cheap output transformer to a ClassicTone. It actually sounds better than the JVM's Crunch channel - "bigger" and clearer. For pure crunch type sounds it's probably one of the best amps I've ever heard - absolutely beautiful with vintage type overdrives, distortion pedals and the like.

For anybody looking to make a 2203 as easily as possible I highly recommend it. If you stick to the stock 2203 conversion it shouldn't be too much trouble.

In the beginning I started with Mojotone Kits, I built 3 of them. They all worked properly on first start up and sounded very nice. I built an 18 watt Marshall kit and compared it to a real Marshall they were very similar, but mine was just noticeably smoother and harmonic. I bought them to build an sell. I now tend to put together my own part kits, since I like to use and experiment different types and brands of capacitors and resistors.

Since we are talking amp kits, I'm wondering if anyone has thought of building the JVM preamp section (or the like) and putting it into a pedalboard?
The turret boards for most Marshall style preamps are pretty clean (and flat) and I think you could easily mount the tubes in a horizontal position so they lay flat as well.

Just an idea I had floating around in my mind a few days ago....

The only person I think would be able to do a layout for a 2 channel JVM Style kit would be Casey Butt. If he did a layout using his clean green which is more like a Fender Twin and for me OD1 for the other channel that would be perfect for me to build. Casey or Anyone up to the Challenge? I’m good at following layouts and reasonably OK with schematics, If something like this gets posted, I’ll build it and post the findings.

Actually, I've thought about doing something like that... designing an amp from the ground up. Specifically, something with a Blackface type clean channel and a JVM OD high-gain channel. But it would need to be prototyped and tested and I've got too many irons in the fire with the effects thing right now. Also, I'd really like to make a very high-gain Vox voiced amp - for those Brian May, Ritchie Blackmore tones without having to shake the windows loose.

Check this link for Casey to update , He keeps on coming up with cool gear.
http://jvmforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.ph ... 18#p108618

I'm finding that most good amp kits approach used price of decent gear, so it's easier to mod than fully build but neither are ridiculous cheap
no easy answers ! I'm addicted to preamps and I can use a modular approach mix & match pres & power.

Any recent good kits ? ...........anyone? build reports ?
