I nailed a really great 1959 SLP tone today with the 410H and a pair of 100 watt Scumbacks.

This amp's best kept secret is Clean Red with Channel and Master Volumes dimed

Just use the gain control as you would use the "Volume" control on a Plexi and there you have it.

There's something about this Channel that gives it a real vintage flavour..must be the pre-gain tone stack exclusive to this Channel only.

I wonder how the other Channels would sound with a pre-gain tone stack? I guess it would be similar to running an eq pedal into the front of the amp.

you know i kind of agree with you but since i have owned my amp I have only had one time when it died on me (tube related)....and ti was during the time i dimed the clean red and was seeking that plexi tone....it migh thave been coincidence but i have stayed away from that setting ever since.

Marshall amps have always had the tone stack post-gain. The pre-gain tone stack is more a Fender thing...particulary the tweed amps and black face amps. And some of the early Bassmans had pre-gain tone stacks, but the 5F6-A model, which is what Jim Marshall used for his first amp, had a post-gain tone stack.

So, while I don't own a 410, I've always thought the Clean Orange and Red modes were basically giving you a hot-rodded tweed tone, which, in theory at least, should be different from a vintage Marshall.

The Mesa F-50 I had before was based on this type of setup...the clean channel based on a Deluxe Reverb and the lead channel on a Tweed Bassman, but I found the tone controls only had minimal effect on my tones...didn't like it at all for high gain tones. I find that it works well for clean and bluesy stuff.

That's why I love the JVM...the Clean Green (even on the JVM2) has a very Fendery preamp, but for my crunch and OD, I've got post-gain tone stacks!!

That is sort of funny, or not. But I did laugh a little. I run both the clean and crunch channels like that quite a bit. I do agree some of the better, fatter, fuller tones are in the clean and crunch channels. But I do like a saturation of od1 and od2 equally well.
