Boston's Original Prototype Power Soak and Super Tremelo

Post by RockmanCentral » Thu Jan 03, 2019 12:52 am

This might be of interest to some of you....

For those of you familiar with Tom Scholz of Boston, he often talked about his first invention that he developed in order to record and perform with his Marshall's without annoying his neighbors or blowing everyone off the stage.... the Power Soak. It's an interesting piece of rock history!

For those of you that always wondered what the originals looked like, it seems that original Boston guitarist, Barry Goudreau, still has one of them and he's offering it up for sale on Reverb....

BTW, he's also selling his Marshall Super Tremelo, which was used on the first couple of Boston albums and tours, as well...

LOL!! Yeah, that was probably the engineer side of him being in control before he had to develop his marketing side.
Can't argue that it didn't work for him though!!

My Weber Mass has a big rheostat in it. I know because I've dropped it and had to replace the rheostat a few times lol. Works great though.
My gear list? Do a search.

Yeah, to me I would think a big rheostat would be better... less parts.
Maybe they went with the individual resistors for the ability to select impedances?

Not sure of the timeline [ before Boston ? ] but the Altair power attenuator was the first of these devices I remember and
it used a rheostat
