Hi folks, not sure if this is a daft question but has anyone got any thoughts on Alex Lifeson's tone with Rush.

Obviously I'll need a phaser for Spirit of Radio. I was really wondering about generic settings.

Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers, Rich [smilie=icon_biggrin.gif]

(New 'Caravan' single from Rush is ace! [smilie=gt-happyup.gif] so had to dig out all them old classics)

Well, it's been a while since I've tried to dial in a really close Lifeson tone. I play a lot of Rush songs, but pretty much just use my own settings these days.

His tone is hard to nail down because he's used so many different rigs over the years. Lots of different Marshalls in the 70s and early 80s, but then he was using other stuff, including solid state Gallien Kruegers in the 90s. Of course, he's been using Hughes and Kettner for many years now.

I generally find myself using Crunch Red and OD Green for stuff from the 70s and 80s...sometimes Crunch Red with a tube screamer type pedal pushing it. I keep the treble pulled back and the bass high, and my mids fairly high, but that's personal preference as much as anything. And I know he uses greenbacks in his Signature H&K cabs, and I assume he did in the early days, too, but I doubt he always has. Anyway, I generally use my greenback cab when playing Rush tunes.

For Rush from the more recent years, OD Orange works well.

Thank's Surfcaster - I'll give these a go!

I've just got 'Rush Deluxe Guitar Tab Collection 1975 - 2007', can you recommend any other good Rush tab books?

This one looks OK although alot of the bits that involve 2 or 3 guitars are broken down into one part.

Cheers, Rich. [smilie=gt-happyup.gif]

I've never purchased a Rush Tab book. There is a website called the Rush Tablature Project that has lots of very accurate Rush Tabs and it's pretty much where I have gotten all my Rush tabs, with the exception of a few that I've gotten from various guitar mags over the years.

Anyway, here's the link:
