2 x 2x12 cabs v 4x12

Post by Celt » Fri Nov 24, 2017 4:56 pm

Would 2 cabs, 2x12, on top of each other sound as good as a 4x12?

IMO a 4x12 sounds better than a 2x12, and I can only assume that a 4x12 will also sound better than two 2x12s stacked.

So if it's a 4x12 you really want, then go get one.

I used to use a 2 x 12 mainly because of transportation problems. Then I used 2 - one each side of the stage, which sounds huge, and still fitted into my car better than a 4 x 12. Also gives a much better spread of sound for the band and the audience.

I also tried them stacked, and although it sounded good, I would say it doesn't sound as good as a 4 x 12. I think it is to do with the proximity of the speakers, and the volume of air inside the cab.

I now have a different car, and can carry a single 4 x 12 stood up in the back [smilie=icon_biggrin.gif]

Thank you, that’s interesting and I was thinking the same due to ease of transportation. A 4x12 does look the part though doesn’t it

If you're the lone guitarist, then the two 2x12s, one on each side of the stage, can be good. You can create a live "mix" that acts like a studio recording. Put the bass rig in the middle near the drums, and your guitar cabs on the edges. Whenever I'm the only guitar, I use a 4x12 on my side and run a 2x12 over on the bass side. It works great. Bass naturally travels and is super-mono anyway, so it will be fine anywhere. Guitar sounds sometimes needs the help. It's just a little more hassle to set up, but that's life. If you have another guitarist on the other side, then just use a single 2x12 or 4x12 for your side.

Another advantage of using 2 cabs is you can have one open back and one closed back
