Would there be a difference with an open back B cab?
I highly doubt it... the difference in tone between "A" and "B" cabs is hugely over rated. The difference is only a perceived difference. The "A" cab has a larger sound dispersion pattern since two of the four speakers point up while the others point forward. So if you only have one cab sitting on the floor the "A" cab will direct more of the high frequencies up to your head making it appear to be a really bright sounding cab. With the "B" cab all four speakers are pointed forward. So if you only have a "B" cabinet sitting on the floor all of the high frequencies are directed at your legs instead of up to your head. As a result "B" cabs sound much bassier (or in reality, they sound less bright).

Really though, I have a full stack of two "B" cabinets... once you put the second "B" cabinet on top of the first "B" cabinet and you have speakers pointed at your head there is zero difference between "A" or "B"... if you only have one cabinet you may benefit from getting an "A" instead of a "B" because the "A" cab does project the sound better due to the two angles of the speakers.

I guess I lucked out when I picked up my 2 1960b cabs. Bought em off a guy who use to tour with em and they stayed in a road case since day one. Both cabs from 1990. Both seriously look mint. Both were 280 each :)

$280US each...??? Killer deal, man. I paid $800CAD for a mint looking used cab (stupid me... bought from a store) and $400CAD for a beaten up used cabinet (from a random guy)..

I knew it was a good deal at the time. I just didn't know HOW good.

I sold off one of the cabs and have been trying to find a slant cab so I can get that proper full stack goodness. haha. Problem is I've been waiting for a little over 6 months for a 1960a to pop up for a similar deal and have had no luck. Seems everywhere I look locally they are in the 475ish range.

that sounds about normal... between $400 to $500 depending on condition (not mint looking) and about $500+ for mint looking ones

I want to post my results in an experiment. I use 4 celestion golds in my 4x12. I use 2/3 open back.

I had an A cab, and was able to get a B cab cheap. So I transferred the golds to the B cab, used the same home made back panel so the cab is 2/3 open back. I installed the mitchell donuts, as the A cab had.

The B just sounded better. Same speakers, same wiring, same setup. It sounded better from all the angles and distances I tried.

I think having all 4 speakers one one plane and one piece of wood makes a difference. Maybe the volume (dimensions of the box) plays a role too, but I use open back, so it may be negligible or non-existent.

The B cab was also road worn, so it could just me the mojo too

I got my B cab from the Guitar Center website. Just select their used gear and it will show you all the used cabs from all the GC's around the country.

I found a 1960B in good condition for $399 and shipping was I think $35.00.

Ebay is useless anymore IMHO. I had been scouring eBay and local Craigslist with no luck when I tried GC.

Sorry for reviving this thread but just want to put interesting link regarding straigth and angled cabs. Because of this I went for a B instead of A.
