Keep it very low volume. Amps don't care about bass, but guitar speakers do.
I record bass tracks through my JVM and 4x12 all the time. It sounds awesome. I do keep the volume pretty low though. I wouldn't do this live.
My gear list? Do a search.
Sure you can play a bass guitar through the JVM, pretty much as loud as you want. It's the speakers you should be most concerned about..guitar speakers aren't really made to hit the extreme excursion (the deep inward and outward movement) bass speakers are. You can do it at low volumes no issue, but when you crank it, you might really stress them. If I were to do this (and I've honestly considered it), I'd have a separate cab dedicated to playing bass. Then you won't even have to worry about whether or not your stressing out your guitar speakers, plus, it'll help save your tubes from vibrational torture chamber they'd otherwise be in.
