Sweet Child Of Mine (JVM410 / Gibson Les Paul)

Post by wolbai » Sun Jan 27, 2019 12:52 pm

Hi there,

pretty calm in this JVM-forum section. But I have to admit that I much more prefer playing music rather than talking about music equipment [smilie=icon_mrgreen.gif]

I have recently recorded with my duo partner this Guns N' Roses - Cover and spiced it up a bit with our own flavour.

My Gibson Les Paul Deluxe is equipped with Suhr Doug Aldrich pickups. This guitar - pickup combination has a nice top end and a good note separation on High Gain sounds.

I recorded several guitar tracks with my JVM410 at various gain stages (Crunch-Orange, OD1-Orange, OD2-Red).
The OD2-Red is a pretty good Lead channel for compressed, singing High Gain sounds.

I don't mic the guitar parts. I use a Radial DI-box with a good cab-simulation and a Rockcrusher power attenuator.
This fits pretty much more into our recording-/rehearsal room situation.

In case of interest here are my amp settings for the OD1/OD-2 channels:
- Volume: 5/10
- Gain: mostly around 2-3/10.
- Treble/Bass: around 3-4/10
- Mids: 8-9/10.

Power amp section settings:
- MV1: around 5/10
- Resonance: 0/10
- Presence: mostly around 4-6/10 (sometimes a bit higher)

For the Crunch and OD-channels I prefer having a Tube screamer from my Fractal FX8-MultiFX board in my signal chain.
Noise Gate, Wah and Rotary effects are also directly recorded from the FX8-board.

I finally have added the FX-loop effects (Delay, Reverb) with my Cubase software and Plugins during the mixing process.

And yes, there is also some Equing on the guitar tracks during the mixing process going on:
- I tend to cut frequencies under 100-150 Hz
- I increase around 750 Hz (parametric)
- I increase around 5.5 Khz (parametric)

Our own guitar and vocal tracks are completed with separate playback tracks for bass, drums, keys.

Any feedback is welcome. Have fun while listening / watching:

This was one of my favorites from GNR...... until the local radio station here decided they had to play it 20 times per day!!!
Regardless, you did a really nice job on it.

@Andy + @RockmanCentral:

Thank you too for your nice feedbacks!

I forgotten to mention:

As my stock power amp section tubes were quite worn-out after 4 years, I have replaced them with EH 6CA7 tube (before the recording).

Although new tubes do always sound better than worn-out ones, I think these 6CA7 tubes have are great clarity and a nice high top end.
