yeah I heard over at rig talk that Mike won't be taking mod orders for quite some time as he is busy building his own awesome amps and working on the Natas. I am seriously mauling over placing a Bones order, based on the yt videos.
How would you compare the Cali mod to the JVM, particularly the high gain "metal" settings? It seems to me that the Cali,Bones, etc are very tight and percussive, kind of like a Splawn Quickrod, but with slight more lower mids and hence a more modern voicing. Can the JVM get close?
I hope im not going to get flamed for this.... so just let me say first I have great respect for the jvm205h
The cali mod and the jvm205h share some similarities....
of all the tones that are in the jvm the cali mod can do most of them but not quite all and in a most cases I feel the cali can do them a quite a bit better, but.... the cali cant do everything the jvm can either
but... there are many more sounds that the cali mod can do that are simply immpossible to acheive with jvm and to be honest I think those are the best ones
I think the cali has much much better playing feel and way better tone at most settings also there is definitely a LOT more gain on tap with the cali and the gain is usable even at its most extreme settings
the jvm doesent handle extreme gain anywhere near as well , although im not sure how to compare metal high gain as Im not sure we have the same ideas as to what that is.
one of the biggest differences with the cali is the saturation switch which can be switched in or completely out of the circuit , this offers the highest gain levels and a produces a very very different feel tone and gain level to the jvm , it creates a compression as well as gain, the compression it produces doesent turn the amp to mush or interfere with playing feel in any way in fact it is amazing to play and is I would say my favourite setting , its phenominal..
the cali also has other switches one changes from spongy to tight the other changes from fat to punchy ,all are killer options ,there is one master and there are two preamp controls which both have three way bright switches, plus a resonance control.
the cali can be tight and percussive but can also be set for lots of other types of playing feel
Im sticking my neck out here but I believe the cali is a more versatile amp in terms of the range of tones and different feels it can produce and it has tones the jvm just cant produce
Ive tried beleive me.
the only amp ive played so far that comes close to the cali mod is the mark cameron cc-v and I prefer the cali over that
I havent heard the fortin bones first hand yet but Ive been told by mike fortin and dan gower that the bones and the cali are quite different
as good as I feel the cali is though ....I still love the jvm205h
I hope this gives you some insight and I genuinely hope no one here feels Im slating the jvm as Im not , they are just different amps its as simple as that
