410HJS PROBLEMS ONLY 1 WEEK OLD

Post by bullldozer1984 » Fri Sep 29, 2017 5:26 pm

So my amp started motor boating last night. A pair of power tubes are redplating too. Only 1 week old. Not happy at all. Obviously it’s going back and I want a replacement, but in the meantime I’m amp-less. The whole reason I bought a brand new amp was reliability. And mine is fucked after a week. The good ole world of tubes.

Cheers man. Anyways, such is life. For what it’s worth, after I pulled the tubes out, blew all the (what appeared to be) metal shavings off the pins (yeh I know) it didn’t motor boat again. But it continued to red plate.

METAL SHAVINGS!!???!!!!????? Nothing like QC, nothing like it at all....
JVM205h. Added 100K from R94/C43 to ground for V1b (OD Channel) gain reduction. Installed 1000pF in series with 47K, in parallel with R58 (82K), to reduce power amp squeal. V3 Valve Wizard diode protection mod. Active power soak for more EL34 goodness.
Guitars: Angus Young Sig SG w/ Pearly Gates Neck and Custom Custom Bridge, Les Paul Special (2 pups) w/ SD Stacked P90s. And occasionally a Warmoth Strat w/ Dimarzio True Velvet in N, M, SD P-Rails in B.
HD500x in 4CM for all pedals and Midi control of 205h (grounds lifted on two of the signal cables).

Its what they appeared to be. Although I cannot confirm it. Maybe the sockets were dodgy. Who knows..
All I know is, there was a bunch of stuff on the pins that shouldn't have been there. Yeh QC.. Hah

In my experience, almost all bulk electronic manufacturers use dip and/or flow soldering machines which usually leave small, sometimes loose pieces of solder behind. If these pieces are not washed or blown out at the factory, the electronic device, whatever it may be, is delivered to the customer with these loose pieces of solder in the device. So I always use a can or two of CRC or another electronic parts cleaner to "wash" off the circuit boards of my amps to remove any lingering or loose metal shavings or solder.

^^^^ that's probably good advice, and it sucks that a consumer should ever have to do that. I have CRC and another cleaner for my own projects, but have never considered doing that on a purchased item.
