I am sure this has been covered before but got tired of searching! I want to record song ideas and have an old cassette Tascam four track. I need to plug a regular quarter inch plug from the recorder into the JVM to avoid having to mic the cab. Does anyone do this?
Thanks!

Easy. a mic lead with a phono jack on one end into the Tascam.

cool. So you are saying use a mic lead out of the "EMULATED LINE OUT" on the JVM into the Tascam?

I have an old Tascam cassette 4-track as well. I haven't tried it with the JVM yet as it is in storage until it becomes vintage like 8-tracks. If it is a model with a mini trim slider beside the main slider on two tracks, I would plug it there and adjust the trim level to suit. The JVM's XLR out is very hot, so start with the trim level at the lowest setting and raise it from there to avoid clipping.

Ya, sure. If I read you right, you want to use the emulated line out from the JVM rather than micing. If that's the case you'll need a single cable with an XLR female at one end and a regular 1/4 inch mono plug at the other end. You can get these pretty much at any music store. You should be able to plug the 1/4 inch plug directly to your tascam and use the trim to adjust the input gain.

Guys,
Thanks very much for the advice. I used to use a regular 1/4 inch plug out from my VOX Valvetronix but I sold that to get the JVM and am not looking back! My older 70's JMP would have to use a mic. I want to record my late night noodling for song and riff ideas. Handy when booze is involved! :)
later!

Hey,
You are right. The XLR out is really hot! Even with the levels on the four track all the way down I have to lower the Master V all the way down and drop the Channel Volume to bring the sound down out of the metered red zone! This kind of stinks becuase it obviously changes my dialed in settings and sound. I didn't try it in the standby mode to see if it was any different. I might have to just mike the cab or use a POD. Any suggestions?

The MV will not affect the XLR out level, only the channel volume will. I'll need to unpack my tascam to try it out. BTW, which model of 4-track do you have?

Santiago recommended some kind of in-line attenuator a while back...something like this:

I just gave it a go with my 4 track and it worked. I will try to get the recording onto my computer and post it, but it might be later this weekend.

I used this to convert the XLR to 1/4":
http://cgi.ebay.com/atus-CP8201-Microph ... 2001r21178

My channel volumes were set to 1 and the trim slider on the Tascam was at zero. The highs sounded a bit attenuated and if I turned the treble up (on the JVM or the Tascam), it would sound a little fizzy. I was impressed with the direct signal overall, based on my past experience which always resulted in a harsh, fizzy tone.

Ok, sorry about the mix, I had to use windows sound recorder, so not exactly hifi-low noise.

Rick,

I thought that sounded very cool regardless of the windows recorder. I like your tone on both rhythm and lead. I quickly scrolled through the Clips & Vids section looking at the "Author" column to see if you posted any other clips, but I didn't see any. I may have missed it though. Can you provide a link to any of your other clips or to your band's web-site?

I also found an attachment with your settings marked 01/11 in the Ultimate EQ thread. Do you still use those settings for your live tones and does your live stuff sound pretty close to what you recorded? If not, would you mind posting your new settings or your settings for the recording? Again, nice tone and nice chops!!!

Thanks,
AGC

AGC,

My band is just rebuilding, so no links right yet. As far as my settings go, I honestly haven't settled since then. I'm never satisfied with my tone.

Currently my OD1 (rhythm on the recording) is set:
Gain: 3
Treble: 5
Mid: 8
Bass: 5

OD2 (lead tone for the recording):
Gain: 4
Treble: 2
Mid: 10
Bass: 8

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the recording was made with the channel volumes on 1 to avoid clipping the 4-track. I used my Eagle with stock Gotoh pickups, bridge full and neck less than half and tone full.

Thanks for the compliment and the interest,

Would you believe my old Tascam Porta one finally kicked the bucket! I am looking at the Tascam DP-02 eight track digital recorder. I will continue this when I get it.
Thanks!
