Gary was and is one of my all time favorites. I first read about him in a guitar magazine back in 1983 or 1984 and then bought his "Victim's of the Future" record. I have been a huge fan ever since. Victim's of the Future was the first CD I bought when I started collecting CD's. My prayers go out to his family and friends. [smilie=icon_sad.gif]

Wow, that's a crappy way to come home from a short vacation.

RIP Gary. The dude had one of the most sincerest man-guitar-amp connections the world has ever seen. [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

Yeah, I agree, it's really a one of those events that stop you in your tracks when you get the news. Gary it seems was always trying to break through, but was always just missing the mainstream boat. I wonder if he ever really knew how much of an influence and guitar giant he really was? You know when your on top, everybody loves you, when your not, you wonder where everybody went. He had times where he played sold out shows, then times when he probably couldn't give show tickets away. But his talent never changed. He just got better and better. More diverse, I think.

Back when I was 18 or 19 and in the Air Force, stationed near Ipswich (RAF Woodbridge), I was lucky enough to see him at the Hammersmith in London, back in 83' or 84' during the "Victims of the future" tour. Frickin' amazing!!!!! I was center stage, right on the stage at his feet. For most of the night he played that Peter Green Les Paul he had, plugged into some JCM 800's. The tone was unreal, his technique flawless. He must have just gotten a digital rack delay, because for part of his solo he would play, then the delay would repeat what he played. It couldn't have been set for more than 4 or 5 seconds. He would keep trying to cram in more and more licks each time the delay played back. Faster and faster! It was beyond awesome watching him try and out do himself with each pass of the delay. While doing this he stepped onto this round riser, with lights that flashed around the circular base, and as the riser rose up in the air with smoke coming out of it (it looked like a UFO taking off) he ripped into his main guitar solo. He then went into the intro solo piece of "End Of The World" and then played the song "End Of The World"......
I'm telling you, for an 18 year old dude, it was very cool! I still have the ticket stub, tour program an T-Shirt I bought at that show! lol!!
Well what do you know? On You tube they have some audio of the actual show I was at!!! 2 days before my 20th Birthday!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUa1kt2eZ_M

I had seen a few concerts up to that point with some pretty amazing players. John Sykes, Jake E. Lee, Rhoads, EVH, etc. etc. Some really amazing players, & Gary was no slouch! From Blues to face ripping metal, he could do it with as much sensitivity or aggression that the song required. I mean he was like a guitar players, guitar player.
Oh, and lets not forget about his vocal!! He could have made it as a vocalist alone if he wasn't a phenomenal guitar player.

God Bless you Gary!!

I thought he was incredible. One of the best performances of all time was the "Red House" Tribute to Jimi Hendrix at the Fender 50 th anniversary concert on Paladia. It was because of him that made me buy my Marsahall. Thanks Gary, hope to meet you up there someday, lets jam !!!!!

I spent the afternoon watching tributes to Gary, inc Joe Bonamassa, but the only guy that gets even vaguely close is
John Norum, tho Clapton does a very moving tribute.

So I came across this - had never seen this concert before - every time there's a lesson in control, dynamics, feeling and power ..

Enjoy !

Damn. That was sweet. Makes me want to go buy a Plexi. But I sure pity the folks in front for their loss of hearing!
