The forum lives !

Post by Andy » Mon May 14, 2018 10:36 pm

Hello to everyone !

We're back !

Just to explain, the forum went down 26 december 2017 for these reasons:

Incessant virus infections infecting the server and knocking out the server by corrupting files.
This is because of the shared hosting allowing viruses and malware spread from other users.

because of this I started to look for better hosting in november.

The hosting company wanted $500 or more to fix and delete the infection and almost another $500 to renew the hosting.

I decided this was a bad service that was getting ever more expensive, but the hosting company would not let me close the "unclean" account, even though they would in reality just reformat the disk ...

This I think was to persuade me under duress to stay with them.

I decided I had no choice but to download backups of the important stuff and find another soluition - but by surprise their backup system had mysteriously failed so I had to copy as much as I could over the internet on my rural wifi. This worked but some things were corrupt when I came to look at them, particularly a hole in the forum database data.

I then spent a lot of time researching the best way to get the forum up and in the end I chose a Digital Ocean droplet and a lot of trying
apache, nginix , docker and other toys

So the forum is up but we have to make sure it's working ok so no new signups will be allowed until we're sure its ok.

I thank you all for your patience and especially the donors who continued to support the forum even though it looked like it had died a tragic death, that allowed me to pay for the DO hosting.

Looking to the future i'm thinking of charging 5 gbp for a signup to the forum and so with 3-4 signups per month it should pay the months hosting, without the panic each time the yearly bill comes in, plus fund a remote backup system.

I hope that you find the forum to be faster in terms of response times too, with the new hosting it's possible to run a uk(europe) and US instance to keep speeds and resilience good.

CHEERS ! Andy
